You can pretty much guess what the colors are going to be, what the theme is going to focus on, and how everything is going to be arranged. Traditionalism can definitely be safe and effective in terms of style, but have you ever found yourself growing tired of the ‘same old same old’ look?

In truth, getting away from the norm is good for everyone. By blending some styles and attempting some new things, you can really switch up the look of your nursery without spending more money, or even going to a lot of extra trouble. In this department, an ounce of creative thinking can really land you ‘outside the box’, which is exactly where you want to be when it comes to creative, contemporary nursery décor.

Throw Out the ‘Old’ Ideas

Odds are good that you have a few preconceived notions about how a nursery is supposed to look. The first step towards a new, contemporary baby room is to throw these out. Yes, you need a crib and a changing table… but after that is when you can really get creative and start entertaining some crazy ideas. You have all kinds of options… you just need a little inspiration!

Switch things up a little bit. Flooring is a perfect example. A lot of people debate over whether to do carpet or not in baby’s room. These tiles are soft, interlocking, and can be glued down to the floor to create a unique, super-soft surface for your baby to play on. They come in all kinds of different colors and styles, making it easy to mix and match colors or to go with one solid shade. You can even mix it with carpet to designate different areas!

Tired of the same old rocking chair design? You know… the one that looks hideous, squeaks, and is so uncomfortable that it never gets used anyway? Swap it out for a black leather reclining chair! Chairs like these are becoming a lot more popular because babies do not necessarily need to be rocked to go to sleep… so moms are choosing more comfortable, stylish chairs to sit in with their babies.

Tired of trains, cheesy cartoon characters, or princess themes? Don’t get me wrong, they are cute… but almost every nursery in the world features them in one form or another! Do you feel like they might be just a little bit overdone? Some popular new trends are modern art, maps, or old style biology charts. These are new, fresh, and the maps and charts can be educational! They are also colorful and creative, making them perfect options for creating a space for your baby to spend time in.

Rethink Your Colors

Are you tired of the same old pinks, blues, greens, and yellows? There is no doubt that many of the most traditional colors are VERY overdone… but what could you use as a substitute? Many people are saying that orange is the new pink or blue, and is a fantastic choice for your nursery! To be honest, it actually works. It is a very warm color that catches attention and gives the room a warmth-induced glow. Dark red is another color to contemplate, as it is very contemporary and not usually seen as the primary color in a baby’s nursery.

Tired of the same old furniture colors? Try going with dark wood for a modern alternative. You can also get rid of your ordinary, run of the mill lighting and buy some shades that are more flamboyant and flashy. In addition, you may want to open the windows and utilize as much natural light as possible. Sunlight (in non-direct doses) is good for your baby in many ways.

Regardless of how you choose to decorate your nursery, a little bit of inspiration and creativity can go a long way. With a bit of perseverance and a willingness to do things differently, you can definitely achieve your goal of a modern, contemporary nursery that is even better for your baby than the traditional norm that we have grown so accustomed to seeing!
